Metrorail vs. Car Accident
Houston's light rail system began operations in November 2003. In Houston, the light rail system is called the Metrorail and is operated by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County. In Dallas, the light rail is called DART for Dallas Area Rapid Transit. In 2010, Austin began running its light rail system called LRT and operated by Capital MetroRail which runs from Downtown to the eastside of Austin.
With new vehicles on the roads comes new challenges to Texas drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists who must be aware of the rail system and passenger vehicles which travel on them. Accidents involving the metro rails in Texas cities can result in serious injuries to passengers on the rail system and to the passengers of vehicles in wrecks with the metro railcars. However, because Metro is a government authority, there are certain laws which apply to shield its drivers from liability for causing personal injuries to its passengers and others. Under Texas law, there are caps on the amount of damages in personal injury lawsuits, including those which result in death. The caps depend on the type of accident and injury.
